Michael Sallwasser

President

UU Church of Long Beach, CA

As is the pattern for so many parents who join our church, I started in the RE classroom 20 years ago. I began with high school (my first class had one student), but since then I have taught or assisted at every grade level including adults, with three stints facilitating Our Whole Lives. I have enjoyed the opportunity to teach and learn from the youth and children of my church (and our high school classes are significantly larger today!)

I have also tended to the financial health of my church, organizing several service auctions and chairing three annual all-church canvasses. When the Fullerton Church asked me to design and lead a canvassing workshop, I welcomed the opportunity to be of service and connect with the larger movement.

I nourished the spiritual needs of the church (and myself) chairing the Worship committee, as well as leading and presenting worship services. The fullness of my participation in congregational life includes Strategic Vision committee, Committees on Ministry for the minister and DRE, Trustee, Vice-President and President. Presently, I am a member of the Anti-Racism Transformation Team and co-chair of Personnel.

Fifteen years ago I served on the Search Committee that called our current minister, Rev. Marguerite D. Lovett. This was a demanding experience that deepened my understanding of my faith and gave me insights into working with others toward a shared goal.  Much of my service has been informed by training through the PSWD, not the least of which was the transforming experience of a full week of Leadership Training School. This led to other opportunities for service, participating in and chairing PSWD Leadership Development Committee and serving as Trustee and Vice-President of our district.

More recently, I have served our entire movement as a member of the UUA Board-appointed Journey Toward Wholeness Transformation Committee. Of particular relevance to my qualifications to serve as President of the Pacific Southwest District,  was spending my first year on the committee auditing the district structure’s role in our association’s transformational journey toward wholeness.

Carolyn Saunders

Vice President

Unitarian Unitarian Church of Tucson, AZ

I have been a UU since the 1980s when our family joined the Church of the River in Memphis, TN. We were also members of Accotink UU Church in Springfield, VA, and the UU Fellowship in Heidelberg, Germany. During these years, Unitarian Universalism has truly provided a spiritual context for my life. I have been a member of the UU Church of Tucson for 12 years where I have served in a number of leadership positions including Board of Trustees, President, and now I am the Financial Secretary and an active member of the Worship Associates. Within the District, I have served on the Nominating Committee and the District Assembly Planning Committee. I am serving as the District Coordinator for General Assembly 2012, a “Justice Assembly” which will give all of us in the PSWD an amazing opportunity to concretely express our values of social justice and our belief in the inherent worth of every individual. Let’s all work to make GA 2012 an overwhelming success both for our District and for the greater UU movement. This event can truly give our lives the shape of justice!

Sharon Beard

Secretary

Unitarian Universalist Church in Surprise, AZ

I am relatively new to UUism, having joined the UU Church in Surprise, AZ in March 2005. I was raised in the Roman Catholic Church and for a brief period in adulthood was a member of an American Baptist church.

At the Surprise church, I serve on the following committees: Social Activities - chair, Standing Funds - chair, Lay Pastoral Care, Religious Education (children) and beginning in July, Denominational Affairs as Secretary of the Board of Trustees of PSWD.

Non-church activities include volunteering at a local elementary school (6th grade) and leading 4th grade tours of the Plants and People of the Sonoran Desert Trail as a docent at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix.

Prior to retirement, I was the Corporate Secretary in charge of the trademark and trademark licensing subsidiary of a Fortune 500 company.

Andi Stout

Treasurer

Chalice UU Congregation, Escondido, CA

I am a life-long Unitarian and joined First Church, San Diego, in 1972, two days after arriving in San Diego.

In 1984, I was a founding member of the UU Inland North County Fellowship in Rancho Bernardo, where I served as President, RE Chairperson, Membership Chair, and Treasurer. I am also a founding member of Chalice UU Congregation, where I am currently serving as the chair of the Music Committee. I am also on Chalice’s Ministerial Search Committee, on the Finance Committee, and in the choir. I have previously served on the PSWD Board of Trustees two different times, holding the positions of trustee, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer.

I am retired from a full-time job but have a part-time job related to sewing. I also work on my craft business, which I share with my mother and sister. I do many types of crafts, and enjoy reading and doing crossword puzzles (and, yes, I Sudoku!).

I have been married to my husband Bill for almost 41 years. We were married in the Unitarian Congregation in Ft. Wayne, IN. Bill’s parents were founding members of that church and my parents are still members. We have two grown sons: Jared, who is 37 and lives with his wife Joyce in Torrance, and Adam, who is 32 and lives with his wife Jenny in Annandale, VA, where they attend the UU Congregation of Fairfax.

Barbara Braswell

Trustee

Granite Peak Unitarian Universalist Congregation, Prescott, AZ

I have been the Director of Religious Education at Granite Peak Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Prescott, AZ for the past 8 years and feel blessed to have job that I truly love. In the upcoming year my position will be expanded to Lifespan Faith Development, giving me a wonderful opportunity to connect with the adults in our congregation, as well as our children.

For the past 4 years I have served as President of PSWD LREDA supporting colleagues and helping to uplift the profession of religious education. This summer will also be my 4th year as Dean of Jr. High summer camp at de Benneville Pines. Our district is so fortunate to own this amazing camp that gives kids, youth (and staff) a fun, worshipful camp experience with others that share our Unitarian Universalist values.

While raising a diverse, blended family of 5 children (3 still at home) I have been active in the community promoting acceptance and appreciation for all of our differences.

Multicultural education and social justice are my passion!

Rev. Kent E. Doss

UU Fellowship of Laguna Beach, CA

Rev. Kent Doss is the minister of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Laguna Beach. He was ordained in May and installed as their settled minister in September 2009.

Before coming to serve UUFLB, Kent was an Intern Minister at the Orange Coast UU Church in Costa Mesa. He came to Orange County from Denver CO where he attended Iliff School of Theology. In June 2007 Kent graduated with distinction from Iliff School of Theology with a Master of Divinity with a concentration in Justice and Peace Studies. At the time of graduation Kent also was recognized as Iliff School of Theology’s Student of the Year for 2007 for his academic achievements and campus leadership.

Between his B.A. from the University of Oklahoma and seminary, Kent spent 2002 as a volunteer with the Peace Corps and did a short internship at the UUA Washington Office for Faith and Advocacy. Currently he is the chair of the Laguna Beach Interfaith Council, and a volunteer leader with UU Legislative Ministry’s marriage equality efforts.

Kent first came to the ministry through his work for social justice issues, and he continues a deep interest in those today. His vision for the future of Unitarian Universalism is based on congregations that are deeply embedded within their community, providing a relevant message of hope, and working to make a tangible difference in the world.

Celeste Allen

Youth Member of the Board

Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Phoenix, AZ

My “call” to Unitarian Universalism came when a friend's dad talked me into taking the OWL sexual education program in 5th grade. Somehow I weathered the onslaught of sex terms and pictures and am now moving through my final year as a YRUU with a deepened understanding of my religion and myself.

I served as the Co-Youth Representative to the UU Congregation of Phoenix for the past year and look forward to serving on my church board again this coming year. I also served last year on the PSWD Youth Board as Staffing Guru.

Outside of Unitarian Universalism, I am a senior at Desert Mountain High School. This year, I will be completing the International Baccalaureate program, serving as the Vice President of the Literature Interpretation Club, and reigning as the President of the Mock Trial club. I also enjoy long walks under the stars, playing the cello, and reading.

I am excited to serve on the PSWD board as we nurture and grow our district while moving towards Justice General Assembly 2012. This year promises to be exciting, and I can’t wait to work with the board to achieve awesomeness!

.

The board operates by establishing policies to guide professional and volunteer staff in achieving specific ends relating to the growth, development and extension of Unitarian Universalist ideals by supporting local congregations.
